  • Igor Grosu
Igor Grosu “The plebiscite is a chance for Moldovans to show loudly and clearly that we are Europeans. ... We are not entering Europe, we are returning to it.” 10 minutes ago
  • Maia Sandu
Maia Sandu “Joining the EU is the best thing we can give this and future generations.” 13 minutes ago
  • Igor Dodon
Igor Dodon “We are categorically opposed to this referendum. We are not saying 'no' to talks with the EU and we are not opposed to the EU. We oppose Sandu using it as an instrument for her own interests and those of her party. We are therefore asking voters during the campaign not to take part in the referendum.” 15 minutes ago
  • Ben Hodges
Ben Hodges “Since the fall of Avdiivka in Ukraine's east on February 17 [2024], its forces have oozed forward, swallowing several villages, as Ukrainian forces have performed tactical retreats. Here we are in April [2024], and [the Russians] are oozing out. Why is that? I think it's because that's the best the Russians can do. They do not have the capability to knock Ukraine out of the war. Russia lacked the ability to equip large armoured formations that could move rapidly, with supporting artillery, engineers and logistics. I don't think it exists. That's why I feel fairly confident that the mission for [Ukrainian] general Oleksandr Syrskyi for the next several months is to stabilise this as much as he can to buy time for Ukraine to grow the size of the army, to rebuild the defence industry of Ukraine, as well as give us time to find more ammunition for them. I think of 2024 as a year of industrial competition. So the army has got to buy time.” 2 hours ago
  • Marwan Bishara
Marwan Bishara “Once again, the US's veto demonstrated a policy of it's my way or the highway. Palestine could only be a country the way the United States sees it, or Israel sees it, only at the time that it's suitable to the United States and within the geopolitics and the global interest of the United States. The US is sacrificing the freedom of Palestinian people for egotistical and narrow interests of the United States and Israel.” 18 hours ago
  • Brad Setser
Brad Setser “Tariffs are currently 7.5 percent on electric vehicle battery packs but 25 percent on the components of those packs. The lower rate should be raised. China had long steered its subsidies to companies that manufacture and source their products in China - and sometimes had required those companies to be Chinese-owned. In order to build up industrial sectors where China has a first-mover advantage and now a cost advantage you need to have an insulated market - and to use some of the tools that China has already used.” 22 hours ago
  • Lael Brainard
Lael Brainard “China's policy-driven overcapacity poses a serious risk to the future of the American steel and aluminum industry. China cannot export its way to recovery. China is simply too big to play by its own rules.” 22 hours ago

“It's not clear why they [Kazakh authorities] feel the need for any outside assistance, so we're trying to learn more about it. One lesson in recent history is that once Russians are in your house, it's sometimes very difficult to get them to leave.”

“We're prepared to respond forcefully to further Russian aggression. But a diplomatic solution is still possible and preferable if Russia chooses it. Our goal is to have a relationship with Russia that is predictable and stable, so that we can cooperate when it's in our mutual interest, and address our differences with an open and frank dialogue. It'll be very difficult to make actual progress if Russia continues to escalate its military buildup and its inflammatory rhetoric. And we've been clear with Russia about what it will face if it continues on this path, including economic measures that we haven't used before - massive consequences.”

“For Russia, if things do settle down, it will be a substantial win, demonstrating how critical it remains, and also tethering Kazakhstan to it that much more.”

“The best mission for Moscow's got to be: you go in, you look big and strong standing in visible places and you never actually have to do anything. There's nothing to be gained from shooting at another country's population. But even a successful intervention could leave in place an unpopular government, risk fuelling anti-Russian sentiment and fail to address the underlying causes of the unrest. Russia had presumably calculated that failure to act would risk a worse outcome, namely the fall of Tokayev and the emergence of a power vacuum in Kazakhstan.”

“We live with inflation in Turkey. The biggest components of what we spend money on are food, rent, and transportation, and these are the kind of prices the average consumer faces on a daily or monthly basis. So if you are lying to them, it's very obvious. It undermines trust in Erdogan and the AKP. Turkish public's perceptions of inflation can also drive prices higher. If people think inflation is close to 100 percent, anyone who has any bargaining ability, say in paying salaries or wages, or the prices they charge, pretends inflation is 100 percent. So going forward, that is a disastrous situation.”

“The militants have not laid down their arms, they continue to commit crimes or are preparing for them. Whoever does not surrender will be destroyed. I have given the order to law enforcement agencies and the army to shoot to kill, without warning.”

“President Tokayev has taken decisive and effective actions at a critical moment, quickly calming the situation, which has shown his sense of responsibility as a statesman, and demonstrated a highly responsible attitude to the country and the people. China firmly opposes any force undermining Kazakhstan's stability, threatening the country's security, and sabotaging the peaceful life of the Kazakh people.”
